BANA Summer Camp, for elementary students: Early July to the first week in August every year. The program mixes recreation and academic studies in an imaginative and entertaining way.English, French, Mathematics, Science, Black History. Also Music, Arts & Crafts, Sports, Games and Cultural Activities. Field trips every Friday to end the weeks activities. Field trips and field trip activites are selected to entertain and delight the child, while at the same time meeting the child's development and learning needs.
We have traditionally located the program at school sites in the English Montreal School syste. In the summer 2009 the two following sites below were used:Coronation School, 4810 Van Horne, Cote des NeigesChildren's World Academy, 2241 Menard, Lasalle.
High School Preparation.
This program introduced for the first time this summer at Dawson College. The program is for grade 6 elementary students who are about to enter High School. It prep[ares them for life at High School, teaching them to say no to drugs, premature sex, gangs and delinquency. It teaches what is expected of them at High School from the teachers and the administration, its importance for their success in life after school. It engages them in creative arts, dance, the history of Black achievements in Quebec and Canada. The central amim of the program is to get Black Youth to prepare themselves for making a commitment to education and self development. Graduating elementary school students will be provided with the foundation to smoothly transition from elementary school setting to high school setting.
The program includes French as a second language, Mathematics, English, Arts and cultural workshops; and activities on a wide range of social topics to help students practice their communication and class participation skills.
DaCosta Hall Summer School, for high school students.
Each year for the last thirty five years the QBBE has offered remedial and accredited courses to Montreal Youth. This program has assisted at least 1000 students and boast of a success rate of 60%. The program has been emulated by school boards on the Island since it start up in the mid-seventies. Da Costa-Hall is managed by professional teachers and administrators who work in the Montreal school systems. The intent of the program is to remediate and enrich the student. Its focus is on Black High Shool youth, but about 40% of its clientel now consist of other cultural groups. Mathematics, French, English, Canadian History, General Science and Technology, Environmental Science, History & Citizenship education, History of Blacks in Canada.
The program has been housed at and supported by Dawson College, Montreal, for more than twenty years. Registration takes place each summer at the Atwater Campus.
Entrereneurship & Personal Financial Management.
This is a new program offered by the Black Studies Center in collaboration with the QBBE and ICED (The Institute for Community Entrepreneurship and Development). It is in its pilot stages It exposes youth to alternative career opportunities in business. It is aimed at youth in the age group 18-25. It is not a crime prevention program. It is a personal and alternative career development program. The program is offered on demand with a minimum of five youth and a maximum of 10. It requires serious commitment from the youth involved, the sponsors of these youth, parents, and organizations referring youth to the program.
